Kiev : Ukraine’s Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko has tendered his resignation over his detention in Germay last week following a drunken brawl at Frankfurt airport.
Lutsenko asked the parliament to approve his resignation and discuss the issue while he was not present in the house.
According to German media reports, Lutsenko and his 19-year-old son were not allowed at Frankfurt airport to board a flight to Seoul May 4, as they were both extremely drunk and behaving inappropriately.
They were then arrested after fighting and injuring police officers who were called to the scene.
The Party of Regions, the largest opposition party of Ukraine, demanded Lutsenko’s resignation soon after the report surfaced.
However, the interior ministry said the accounts of the incident were based on media reports and were not true. Lutsenko also claimed that the German Police apologized to him for the incident, but he would not reconsider his decision to resign.
“Considering that the smear campaign against me and my son is continuing, I understand how difficult it will be for me to carry on the duties of interior minister,” Lutsenko said.
He also said the “incident” had been used by opponents pursuing their own interests amid ongoing domestic political disputes.
