“If you don’t know Hindi, you cannot be a prime minister. There are certain skills that are required for certain work. That is why (P.V.) Narasimha Rao became a good prime minister… also because he was a good communicator,” he told the NDTV news channel Thursday.

Late former prime minister Narasimha Rao, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, was well-versed with several languages.

Asked if he had any grievances for the Congress not choosing him for the post of prime minister, Mukherjee said: “I have no complaints. I am senior enough in the party. The party has given enough. There are many people who have worked hard for the party.”

Commenting on the possibility of a post-poll alliance with the Left, he said: “We have good relations with the Left political parties. But they have never kept pace with the developments. They believe in an ideology, which does not taken into account the contemporary ideology.”
