Hyderabad : Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi was Monday unanimously elected as the Praja Rajyam Party’s (PRP) leader in the Andhra Pradesh assembly.
The newly-elected PRP legislators met here and elected Chiranjeevi as the leader of the legislature party.
The PRP, which made its debut in state politics, won 18 of the 294 assembly seats but drew a blank in the Lok Sabha elections.
The performance of the PRP, launched by the superstar in August last year, was disappointing as it was hoping to form a government or play the role of a kingmaker.
The Congress party retained power by winning 157 assembly seats and also swept the Lok Sabha polls by bagging 33 out of 42 seats in the state.
Chiranjeevi, who was elected from Tirupati assembly constituency but lost from Palacole in his native West Godavari district, told party legislators that he would raise people’s issues in the assembly and oppose any anti-people policy of the government.
The PRP founder said he would hold district-wise reviews of the party’s performance and take necessary steps to strengthen its organisational structure.
Though the PRP won few seats, it polled 15 percent votes, badly affecting the chances of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
The PRP also came second in 31 assembly and three Lok Sabha seats.
The percentage of votes polled by the PRP will help it to get recognition and retain its railway engine election symbol.
