Islamabad: More than 1.6 million people have been displaced in Pakistan’s troubled North West Frontier Province (NWFP), as the battle against the Taliban hots up, officials said Monday.
About 164,000 people have fled their homes in the Malakand region alone since the military operation started in the area in late April.
A total of 17 relief camps have been set up in the area to house the displaced civilians.
The provincial relief office said nearly 215,017 people are presently housed in the camps. Some of the displaced people have come from the neighbouring areas.
To provide aid to the displaced people, the government has set up 75 registration centres in cities like Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Kohat and Peshawar in NWFP.
