Chandigarh : What better way to celebrate World No Tobacco Day than launching a free SMS service to help people quit smoking?
Live Life More Foundation Sunday launched the unique programme of sending free SMS tips to help people who want to quit chewing tobacco or smoking but are finding it hard to drop the addiction.
Sandeep Jassal of Live Life More Foundation said: “Out of the top eight causes of early deaths all across the world, six causes are directly related to tobacco chewing or smoking according to a recent WHO (World Health Organisation) study.”
“Because of the use of highly addictive compound nicotine in tobacco, its users are not able to quit it easily. Smoking pushes around 4,000 chemicals inside the body, which also include many cancer causing ingredients,” said Jassal, also a lifestyle consultant.
He said: “Anyone can enrol himself or his relative in this programme by sending us an SMS on 56677 by typing My Life followed by the mobile number. Then we will send free SMS tips on how to quit and why to quit smoking for the next six weeks.”
Nikunj Dhiman, an engineering student who is a chain smoker for the last two years, told IANS: “We really appreciate such kind of an initiative. I have already registered for this service and I hope that it would work for me. I have attended various de-addiction seminars before but to no avail as I find it difficult to talk about my personal life with a stranger.”
“However, here one thing is really good as there would be no individual peeping in your life by asking infinite senseless questions.”
Chandigarh was officially declared smoke free on July 15, 2007. People were barred from smoking in public places or even at places where the public has access. Last year smoking was banned at all the public places across India.
