New Delhi : Nearly a fortnight after they began their stir, meat traders in the capital called off their strike Thursday. According to Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain, the traders will move to the new slaughterhouse in Ghazipur “as soon as it is practically possible”.
The traders’ strike began soon after the centuries-old abattoir near the walled city was closed down Oct 22 after a five-year legal battle between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the meat traders association.
The meat traders refused to move to the new high-tech slaughterhouse in Ghazipur in east Delhi, which has been criticised because it is next to a sanitary landfill site and a stinking drain.
They also met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Wednesday.
However, after continuing their strike for 12 days, they called off the strike Thursday.
The mayor said: “The meat traders called off their strike today (Thursday). We told them that we are fully aware of their problem and will do our best to try and solve them.”
“I will meet the traders Nov 10 to discuss their various problems,” Kanwar Sain told IANS.
“The Ghazipur slaughter house is ready. The meat traders will shift to the new slaughter house and start working there as soon as it will be practically possible,” he added.
