Kolkata: A 24-year-old man killed his wife and then tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas district Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place in Kolkata’s adjoining Sonarpur locality when Shantanu Chowdhury shot his wife Anubha and tried to kill himself.
While Anubha was declared brought dead to the hospital, Shantanu survived the suicidal attempt and got admitted to a nearby private hospital with critical head injury.
Police said both Santanu and Anubha were college mates and were drug addicts. Later, they tied the knot despite objection from their parents.
“We found out last (Tuesday) night that both my son and his wife were taking drugs at home. We’d a heated argument as we caught them red-handed,” said Manju, Shantanu’s mother, who broke down in tears.
“The conjugal relation between my son and his wife was not so good. They often had problems and we used see them quarrelling with each other,” she said.
