Using religion as a shield for wrong acts is un-Islamic, says woman activist

By Kulsum Mustafa,

Lucknow, October 9: “We all have to first fight our personal battles pertaining to fear and inequality before we can fight for the community.” This was the advise of Ms Zakia Soman, founder member Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) from Gujarat. Urging women to be strong and extrovert she said only those who have been able to overcome discrimination and struggle will be able to lead others. Condemning those who use religion as a shield to do all irreligious things she said those who say that marrying off a girl at the age of 12 will earn you a place in heaven are blatantly violating the tenants of Islam. The activist said our first fight should be against the system that fails to recognise women as human being and does not give a woman the due respect in her home and society.
