Ranchi : Suspected Maoist guerrillas Monday shot dead two senior officials of a coal mine, blew up a railway track and torched trucks in Jharkhand while enforcing a two-day strike in the state, police said.
Panam Coal Company Director Sheetal Prasad and Additional Director Deenanath were killed when they had gone for a morning walk early Monday near Amarpara locality of Pakur district, about 550 km from state capital Ranchi.
“It may be either Maoist or criminal incident. We cannot rule out possibilities of involvement of Maoist rebels,” Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) of Dumka range Murari Lal Meena told IANS.
In another incident Monday, Maoist guerrillas blew up a railway track in Bokaro district.
According to police, the rebels blew up the railway track between Bokaro Thermal and Jharndih railway stations which disrupted rail services and stranded more than 10 trains.
The guerrillas also torched four trucks and blew up a bridge in the state.
One truck was torched late Sunday on Grant Trunk (GT) road near Topchachi in Dhanbad district, around 270 km from here, while three other trucks were burnt in Isari block of Giridih district, around 210 km from Ranchi. Besides, a bridge was blown up in the same block.
“Maoist rebels also fired indiscriminately at buses passing through GT road in Dhanbad. Three people were injured in the firing,” a police officer said.
The outlawed CPI-Maoist called for a two-day strike, beginning Monday, in five states, including Jharkhand, to protest the central government’s stepped-up initiative against them. The strike has also been called to protest alleged police repression in the name of anti-Maoist operations.
