Five gamblers belonging to tribal communities sustained bullet injuries in police firing in the incident that occurred in Binaguri in Jalpaiguri district Sunday night, Inspector General (Law and Order) K.L. Tamta told IANS over phone.

“The situation is now under control. Additional police pickets have been posted in and around the spot,” Tamta said.

Trouble broke out after a police contingent reached the area on receiving information that a group of people were gambling at a fair.

Seeing the police, the gamblers pelted them with stones and bottles. The inspector-in-charge of Banarhat police station was seriously injured when he was hit by a glass bottle.

Police made a baton charge and lobbed tear gas shells before resorting to firing.
