AMU V-C holds meetings with students, officials to restore peace

New Delhi: On the fourth day of the killing of a post-graduate student near the campus, Professor P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, today kept himself busy holding meetings all through the day – with students, teachers and officials – in his desperate attempts to restore peace in the university. A section of students is sitting on a dharna in protest against the murder on October 25.

The V-C held a long meeting with Students’ Grievance Committee wherein 150 students took part.

“The University administration must take stern action against those who are trying to disturb the peaceful academic atmosphere of the University and political interference must also be not allowed. This was unanimously resolved in a meeting of Students’ Grievance Committee, comprising 150 students of all halls of residence,” said Dr Rahat Abrar, Public Relations Officer, AMU. The meeting was presided over by Prof P.K. Abdul Azis.

The students said that they are extending their full cooperation to the administration in this hair of crisis. They urged the University authorities to put premium on their future and brook no suggestion related to closure of the University. The demand of resignation of University officials is totally unjustified and it is aimed at creating disturbance at the campus, they said.

Prof. Abdul Azis said that the administration is fully committed to safeguard the interest of the student and peace will be maintained at all cost. The University does not believe in the use of force and it believes in moral policing. Dialogue process involving senior teachers and students will continue. Agitation is no solution and he has initiated dialogue at all levels. He said that all legitimate demands of the students will be fulfilled and urged the agitated students to call off their dharna.

The V-C also convened a meeting of prominent citizens and Members of AMU Court who also extended their full cooperation. The meeting urged the administration not to allow outsiders inside the campus.

Meanwhile, the V-C has set up a high level committee comprising all the Deans of the faculties to address various issues brought to the notice of during the massive interaction exercise undertaken by the University with the students of the University.

The Committee will examine the genuine difficulties faced by the students both at the Department of Studies and Halls of Residence. The Committee will submit its detailed report to the University within one month time. Prof. Zubair Khan, DSW will be the convener.

The Committee will examine all the grievances and submit its report within one month to the University for consideration and necessary action.
