Media reports quoted officials here as saying that the meeting is taking place with the backdrop of the presidential election in Afghanistan and this country is to be the focal point of the talks here.

The result of the election is still not clear and a second round of voting may be required to separate incumbent Hamid Karzai from his rival, Abdullah Abdullah, a former foreign minister.

Wednesday’s meetings are being hosted by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who is holding bilateral talks with US Special Representative Richard Holbrooke before the broader talks with the 27 nations.

Holbrooke is reported to have expressed frustration and even anger at the Karzai Administration and the inability of the President to curb corruption and fraud.
