The accused have been identified as Jolly, a Chandigarh resident, and Hardev Singh, a resident of Kharar town in Punjab, some 20 km from here.

“They had approached Kamalpreet Kaur on phone and offered her a post of teacher in the present recruitment process. They demanded Rs.400,000 from her,” a police officer said.

The matter was reported to Chandigarh Education Secretary-cum-Chief Vigilance Officer Ram Niwas Sep 3 who directed Senior Superintendent of Police S.S. Srivastava to look into the matter.

“Calls were monitored and their conversation was recorded. The deal for handing over the money was fixed for Saturday evening. In the meantime, police laid a trap and arrested Jolly on the spot while accepting the money,” the police officer said.

During interrogation Jolly named his accomplice Hardev, who was also arrested late Saturday night.

“A thorough probe in the entire matter would be done so that other links could be established. There will be a zero tolerance for any such kind of irregularity in the present recruitments,” said Niwas.
