Hooch toll rises to 29 in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : As many as 11 more people died after drinking spurious liquor in Saharanpur district Saturday and Sunday, taking the death toll from hooch to 29 in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

While two people died Tuesday and 10 Wednesday, six others died on Thursday and Friday. Eleven people died late Saturday and early Sunday.

“Most of them bought the liquor from Khasauli locality of Deoband. Four wine shops have been sealed in this area. Samples have also been picked up from all the outlets and have been sent for tests,” Senior Superintendent of Police Amit Chandra told IANS.

He said over two dozen people were ill and undergoing treatment in different hospitals. The condition of some is serious.

Meanwhile, police have arrested nearly two dozen people, including the kingpin of a gang involved in manufacturing spurious liquor, till Saturday. “Suraj Bhan, along with his aides, has been arrested,” Chandra said.

The entire staff of Khasauli police station and inspector of Deoband police station were suspended Thursday for negligence.

“More arrests will be made soon. National Security Act will be imposed on all those arrested till now and others found involved in this illicit trade,” Chandra added.
