Kolkata: Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee visited several Muslim-dominated areas of this West Bengal capital Monday, greeting people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. She also met the family of Rizwanur Rahman, a youth who was mysteriously found dead near the railway tracks exactly two years ago.
The Trinamool Congress chief walked across many localities in eastern Kolkata like Topsia, Park Circus and Kaurya to take part in the Eid celebrations.
Banerjee met the family members of Rizwanur Rahman, whose body was found by the railway tracks at Patipukur near Dum Dum Sep 21, 2007. His family lives in Park Circus locality in the eastern part of the city.
Rizwanur, a 30-year-old graphic designer working with a multimedia firm, was found dead barely a month after marrying industrialist Ashok Todi’s daughter Priyanka.
His death unleashed an unprecedented outcry for justice in civil society, with many accusing the ruling Left Front government in West Bengal of ‘shielding’ the tainted policemen behind the case.
Several police officers, including the city police top cop, were later removed from their posts for their alleged role in Rizwanur’s death and bringing pressure on the youth to opt out of the marriage at the behest of Todi, chief of the Lux Cozi group.
Apart from Kolkata, Eid was celebrated with festive fervour across the state with people thronging mosques in the morning and relishing specially made feasts with family and friends.
