Kochi: Tomin J Thachankari, Kannur Range Inspector General, will investigate into the charges of beating up of a journalist the night before Eid in Kasargode, northern Kerala. The police had reportedly beaten up Rahman Thayalangadi, senior journalist and Kasargode bureau chief of ‘Chandrika’ daily, on Sunday night.
There were some clashes in the Kasargode town on Sunday night. Rahman was reportedly beaten up when he was travelling in the area on his scooter after the clashes were over. Reports say that the police stopped his bike and beat him up while questioning.
The police reportedly did not release him even after he revealed that he was a journalist and that he was travelling on a scooter owing to his unfit legs. Rahman was beaten up so badly, especially on his back. He is admitted to a private hospital. The police had also reportedly destroyed the back side of his scooter.
Mahesh Kumar Singla, north zone ADGP, informed that IG Tomin J Thachankari would probe into the case. Strong measures should be taken against those who beat up Rahman, demanded Sibi John Thooval, Kasargode Press Club president, and TA Shafi, secretary. The district committee of the journalists’ union held a protest march in the town against the police act.
