Kochi: The tenure of the Waqf Enquiry Commission has again been extended for the fourth time. The Commission was constituted in 2007 to look into the irregularities in the Kerala State Waqf Board on a four-month tenure. The tenure has now been extended till October 31.
The LDF Government set up the Commission to look into the alleged irregularities that had taken place in the Waqf Board during the chairmanship of late Panakkad Syed Umarali Shihab Thangal. The two-member commission had retired district judge MA Nisar as chairman and Aboobaker Chengat, former Prosecution director, as member secretary.
Criticism had arisen that the commission was set up aimed at dissolving the Waqf Board constituted during the time of the UDF government on pure political reasons. Both members of the commission reportedly have a leftist orientation. The new Waqf Board constituted by the LDF government is nearing one year. Still, the enquiry against the last Board has reportedly reached nowhere. About Rs 20 lakhs have been set aside in the budget for this enquiry commission.
