Islamabad : An investigation team of US experts Tuesday visited the site of bombed Consulate in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar, police said.
The United States embassy in Islamabad said suicide bombers, who attacked the American Consulate General on Monday, wanted to enter building.
At least two Pakistani security guards employed by the Consulate General were killed in the attack and a number of others were seriously wounded, Ariel Howard, acting US embassy spokesperson said.
Police said that a four-member team visited the blast site and collected evidences from the site. The debris of buildings has not been removed from the site in view of the probe.
TV footage showed the US militarymen were taking pictures of the Consulate, located in the army area heavily-guarded by Pakistani securitymen.
According to the Consulate sources, all the crew remained intact in three blasts.
Police chief Malik Naveed Khan has also formed two teams headed by the Peshawar police chief who have also started their probe.
The police sources said the terrorists, believed to be six, could not be identified as yet.
Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, is under high alert with the security forces and police contingents on patrol on city roads and streets.
The exits and entrances have been picketed and the vehicles are thoroughly searched by the police and army personnel. All vehicles passing through military area are also scanned and IDs of the people are checked.
The United Nations has closed its offices in Peshawar for two days in view of the US consulate attack, a UN spokeswoman Israt Rizvi says. She said that the security for the UN staff will be reviewed on Thursday to take decision if the offices opened.
Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for the American Consulate attack and warned more attacks on the US missions and those who ‘support the US’.
