New Delhi: Renowned Islamic Scholar and Head of the Department of Islamic Studies at Jamia Milia Islmia, Professor Akhtarul Wasey has been appointed vice chairman of Delhi Urdu Academy. Delhi CM Mrs. Shila Dixit who is also chairman of Delhi Urdu Academy has issued notification today for appointment of Prof Wasey.
Earlier, many noted personalities have held this post. They include Kunwar Mahindar Singh Bedi, Ghulam Rabbani Taban, Prof Gopi Chand Narang, Prof Qamar Rayees and M. Afzal.
Born and brought up in Aligarh, Prof Wasey got education at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Currently, he heads Islamic Studies department at Jamia Millia Islamia and is honorary director of Dr. Zakir Hussain Institute of Islamic Studies. He is also editor of magazines ‘Jamia’, ‘Islam and Modern Age (English)’, and ‘Islam Aur Asr-e-Jadeed (Urdu). Besides, he is deputy president of SAARAC Writers and Literatures, general secretary, HIV AIDS of South Asia’s Interfaith Council and president of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Academy.
He is author of several books and his articles have got published in various newspapers and magazines. His topics include current affairs related to Minority, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Allama Shibli Nomani and Maulana Roomi.
In 2008, he was awarded Fulbright fellowship for his contribution in the field of Islamic Studies.
He has been representative at many national and international political, social and cultural institutions including International Human Rights Commission of UN, UNICEF, UNFPA, UN AIDS and OIC.
He has also served as president of Dargah Committee of Ajmeri, member of Central Waqf Council and treasurer of Maulana Azad Education Foundation.
