New Delhi: All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has reiterated demand of 10% reservation for Muslims in job and education and sub-quota for OBCs and Muslims in Women Reservation Bill. It also demanded government not to play games to sow discord between Muslims & non-Muslims OBCs and suggested the government to conduct Caste Census.
“The recommendation of the Mishra Commission for 15% reservation for the religious minorities, 10% exclusively for Muslims plus the unutilized part of 5% quota for the other minorities. The UPA government does not appear to have the political will even to discuss the report in the Parliament or before that at all party meeting, because it did not make up its mind on this recommendation and is too terrified of the sharp even violent response of the Hindutva groups to any positive response” AIMMM says in a statement.
Rejecting government plan to give reservation to Muslims from Mandal Commission recommendation, it said: “The government has come up with another variation on the theme by recalling the alternative recommendation of the Mishra Commission to have a sub-quota of 8% for the minorities, 6% for Muslims & 2% for others, within the OBC quota of 27 %. This ‘alternative’ recommendation by the Mishra Commission has no demographic logic or even arithmetical accuracy to stand on.”
“However sources close to the government feel that by disclosing this option during the Parliamentary discussion, the Government may secure a way of diluting BJP’s opposition to reservation for Muslims & creating a conflict of interest between the Muslims & Yadavs & thus undermining the Yadav support for the Muslim demand quota for Muslim women in Women Reservation Bill and persuade the Yadav leadership to support the Women Reservation Bill, as it is” it added.
But AIMMM expressed its confidence that the Yadav or Muslim leadership will not fall for such tactical moves because two issues are separate & should not be mixed with each other.
On caste Census AIMMM said: “The Government is also facing a long-standing demand not only from the Muslims but also from OBCs for a development-oriented Caste Census, since the Supreme Court has not so far laid down a procedure for determining the level of backwardness of every identifiable social group or the methodology for determining its reservation quota, if found to be backward. The Government may also agree to a Caste Census with common easily accessible parameters, economic, social, political and educational. The Government has blocked the Caste Census for the last 60 years in the interest of perpetuating the dominance of the Hindu high castes, a minority who count less than 10% of the national population. Time has come for the Government not to take shelter behind lack of information & the merit principle.”
The AIMMM demanded the government not to play strategic games to create discord between Muslims & non-Muslims OBCs and give reservation to Muslims rising above the threat of communal forces.
