While normal life was largely unaffected, shops in a few districts like Karur, Gobichettipalayam and Mayiladuthurai were closed.

Production in textile units in Karur and Tirupur were affected as workers did not turn up for work.

Buses and trucks to Kerala were stopped at the borders, disrupting supplies of vegetables and other items to that state. However, there were no disruptions in rail services.

The Southern Railway spokesperson told IANS: “There are no disruptions in train services. Everything is normal.”

The state government has deployed over 100,000 policemen to prevent violence. Tuesday’s protests were called by a slew of parties including the Left, AIADMK and Samajwadi Party.
