Brussels : European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton expressed support to the announcement by United Nations (EU) Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Monday of an international inquiry into the Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla that was carrying aid to Gaza.
“Israel and Turkey’s commitment to the enquiry is a positive step towards finding out the truth of what really happened on May 31,” said Ashton’s spokesperson Maja Kocijancic in a statement here late Tuesday.
“The EU has continuously called for and sought a full, frank, fair, balanced, and transparent inquiry which meets international standards. With this in mind, we look forward to the outcome of the international enquiry,” added the statement.
Israeli commandos attacked a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza in international waters on 31 May, killing nine Turkish peace activists, sparking an international outcry.
The investigation will be led by former New Zealand Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer as chairman and outgoing Colombian President Alvaro Uribe as vice chairman.
The panel will also have one Israeli member and one Turkish member, who will be named soon.
