Kolkata : The West Bengal government Friday drew flak from the opposition parties who alleged that it has shown disrespect to former chief minister S.S. Ray by not holding any discussion in the assembly while passing the condolence resolution on his death.

“This only shows the unparliamentary attitude of the state’s Left Front government. They only believe in partycracy. It only shows the unhealthy state of affairs. Such things are not conducive to a healthy democratic environment,” said Leader of Opposition Partha Chattopadhyay.

Ray, a Congress chief minister of the state 1972-77, was a staunch critic of the Communist-led Left Front government. He died Nov 6.

Congress legislative party leader Manas Bhunia said the speaker did not give them any scope to discuss the life and achievements of the late leader.

“It was earlier decided that there will be a discussion after the condolence resolution was read out. But there was no such discussion. This only shows the government’s attitude towards those who have opposed them.”

However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Syed Masih said the opposition itself did not push for a discussion.
