Seoul : The South Korean military was to conduct three days of firing exercises in the Sea of Japan to the east of the peninsula, a media report said Wednesday, citing the defence ministry.

The drills, scheduled from Wednesday to Friday, follow other live-fire exercises off the country’s west coast earlier this week, and come amid heightened tensions with Stalinist North Korea.

The latest manoeuvres were to include six navy vessels and anti-submarine helicopters, and were due to be held around 100 km south of the maritime border, a navy official was quoted as saying by the South’s Yonhap News Agency.

They are the latest in a series of drills carried out by the South, either alone or in conjunction with the US, since the North’s shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea Nov 23 left two soldiers and two civilians dead.

North Korea does not recognise the maritime border, drawn up by the UN, the US and South Korea after the 1950-53 conflict with the North ended in a ceasefire, leaving the two Koreas technically at war.
