Chandigarh to get its first cactii garden

Chandigarh : Chandigarh, which is famous for its unique rock garden, will soon get a cactii garden, much to the delight of tourists and botanists.

This cactii garden is coming up at the botanical gardens, which is spreads over 176 acres of land, near Sarangpur village here.

“Work is on and very soon the garden will be opened to public. This garden is coming up at a budget of around Rs.2-3 lakh and it will attract more tourists, students and botanists,” Chandigarh’s chief wildlife warden and conservator of forests Santosh Kumar told IANS.

“We have bought around 5,000 cactus plants of 65 different varieties for nearly Rs.200,000, from the National Plant Research Centre in Orissa. We have plans to make it one of the biggest cactus garden of this region,” Kumar said.

Talking about the size of the cactii garden, Kumar said: “There would be four tunnels; 45 ft in length and eight ft broad. Climate here is very appropriate to help in the health growth of cactus.”

Besides, there is a huge National Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden and Research Centre in the neighbouring Panchkula town. It is spread over an area of seven acres and is considered as Asia’s largest outdoor landscaped cactii garden with over 2,500 species.
