New Delhi: The Congress Thursday sought to distance itself from some of party general secretary Digvijay Singh’s remarks during his Azamgarh visit Wednesday, saying that it was for him to explain the meaning and scope of his remarks.
Answering queries from reporters, party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that Digvijay Singh had gone to Azamgarh on a fact finding visit and queries on his remarks should be put to him.
Many other Congress leaders also remained tight-lipped about Digvijay Singh’s remarks in which he said that there had been complaints about the National Human Rights Commission’s probe into Delhi’s Batla House shoot-out and that it had not taken the version of aggrieved parties seriously.
Referring to photographs of one of the alleged Indian Mujahideen operatives killed in the shoot-out, he said the bullet injury in the head did not appear normal.
However, Digvijay Singh, who is Congress incharge of Uttar Pradesh, later clarified that he never termed the gunbattle fake.
“I am not carrying out investigations… I am not an investigating agency. So, I am not in a position to say the encounter (gunbattle) was fake… I haven’t ever termed the encounter fake,” he told reporters in Lucknow Thursday.
