“Today was exceptionally warm. Not only was the day temperature highest this season, but also the hottest Feb 7 in the last five years,” an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) told IANS.

In 2005, the maximum temperature was recorded at 19 degrees Celsius, in 2006 it was 29 degrees, in 2007 it was 27 degrees, in 2008 it was 21 degrees and in 2009 it was 29 degrees Celsius.

“The skies were cloudy today. Since clouds trap the earth’s heat, it added to the warmth of the day,” the official added.

The minimum temperature was recorded at at 11.8 degrees Celsius, three degrees above average for this time of the year.

There is, however, some rain in store for the capital Monday.

“Our forecast for tomorrow (Monday) says that there will be cloudy skies with a possibility of thundershowers and spells of rain in some places,” the official said.

The minimum and the maximum temperatures Monday is expected to be around 15 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively, he said.
