New Delhi : Their aim was to raise awareness about animal birth control, and dressed up as giant condoms in the heart of the city Thursday activists of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sure caught the attention of many.
“There is a growing population of stray animals across the country, but the solution lies not in the adoption of drastic measures but spaying and neutering them. Our campaign therefore has a simple message – dogs can’t use condoms, spay and neuter,” a PETA activist said.
The campaign took place in Jantar Mantar near Connaught Place in Delhi.
According to PETA, spaying one female dog can prevent 67,000 births in six years, and spaying one female cat can prevent 420,000 births in seven years. Spaying is the surgical removal of a female animal’s uterus and ovaries.
“Besides this, our campaign today also aims at encouraging people to adopt stray cats and dogs. A number of these animals are often abandoned by families when they feel that they are unwanted – as a result, they either starve to death or get seriously injured,” the activist added.
