New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is mulling over a plan to convert an unused building in the heart of the capital into its very own food court.

The building situated on Minto Road near Connaught Place in central Delhi, was previously a restaurant called Cup and Saucer, but sealed a few years ago.

“This property is situated near the outer circle of Connaught Place at Minto Road and there is ample space available for parking. It is an ideal site for opening the MCD Food Court in which we may house all the major food chains operating here as well as Delhi’s famous street food,” said MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur.

The two storey building, constructed in the British colonial style, covers approximately 1,400 square meters. The MCD may however modify the construction.

“We may even explore the idea of making a three storied complex in which 25 to 50 shops may be allotted to different restaurants. We will allot these shops on five yearly licence fee basis and suitable modalities can be developed,” Mathur added.

He said that the food court would target tourists.

“Delhi is gearing up for coming Commonwealth Games, and Connaught Place is an important destination point for tourists. The proposed concepts for property development are based on the fact that the project adds value to the city’s image, shall remain relevant and sustainable post the Games are over,” Mathur said.

The MCD food court design would be like the ones at malls, with each brand having a dedicated counter and cooking space, common seating arrangements and a coupons counter.
