New Delhi: Two students of AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Zubair Ahmed and Akshat Jain have won the Asia round of the prestigious World Photography Award by defeating nine countries. They will now try for the world title by taking part in the competition to be held in Cannes, France.
The team comprising Zubair Ahmed and Akshat Jain along with Prof Farhat Basir Khan (MCRC) would now be flying to Cannes, France where they will attend workshops and meet top photographers of the world as also compete to win the world title, said Simi Malhotra, Media Coordinator, JMI. Amongst the 120 competing universities, the 6 winners who will now fight it out for the top contenders in Cannes in an on-the-spot photography competition are: Africa/Middle East: Stellenbosch Academy of Stellenbosch, South Africa; Asia: Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India; Australasia: Griffith University, Queensland, Australia; Europe: Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts, Krakow, Poland; North America: SAIT Polytechnic, Alberta, Canada; South America: Escuela Argentina de Fotografía, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The theme for the year 2010 competition was ‘War and Peace’ as reflected in their country. The Jamia contingent won applause for its very powerful imagery comprising of two images – ‘A Few Good Men-Give Peace a Chance’ and ‘Whose War is it anyway?’
For this prize the Jury comprised Adrian Evans, Director of Panos pictures agency, Adrian Boot, Music photographer and co-founder of www.urbanimage.tv, Jonathon Torgovnik, widely exhibited documentary photographer and co-founder of Foundation Rwanda, Idris Khan, artist and Sue Steward, photography critic, writer, radio broadcaster, photo-editor and journalist.
