Riyadh (Saudi Arabia): The Riyadh chapter of Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association last week celebrated their alma mater’s 89th Foundation Day. Jamia Millia Islamia was established in Aligarh in 1920. Later in 1988 a special Act was passed in the Indian Parliament, making Jamia a Central University.
Addressing the 89th Yaum-e-Tasis (Foundation Day) of Jamia Millia at Khayyam Restaurant in Riyadh, Senior Editor of Arab News daily Mr. Shaheen Nazar advised the Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association (JMIAA) to open night-time public libraries in major cities in Saudi Arabia.
Jamia Millia Islamia offers integrated education from nursery to research. Hakim Ajmal Khan was elected as the first chancellor of Jamia and Mohamed Ali Jauhar became its first Vice Chancellor on 22 November 1920.
The newly elected President of Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association, Riyadh Chapter, Murshid Kamal in his welcome address, said the Association has 250 members. They have been brought under one umbrella with the efforts of seniors, he admitted. He said JMIAA will get reorganization from the mother organization and afterwards the data of the Jamiaites in the Kingdom will be compiled. The JMIAA will launch new directory of Alumni in June. The Association, he informed, also plans to publish its magazine at the end of this year.
Concerned over the UGC direction to allot 27% reservations to OBCs in Jamia, Murshid Kamal said he will submit a memorandum to the visiting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting him to cancel this reservation.
Shafaatullah Khan founder member of JMIAA congratulated the newly elected team, and said they should maintain and strengthen unity among ranks and files of Jamiaiets.
Vice President Liaq Ahmed proposed vote of thanks. A large number of Jamiaets and their families attended the function.
