New Delhi : The year 2009 saw an increase in crimes against senior citizens in the national capital, Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said Saturday.
“Delhi reported 31 cases of crimes against senior citizens in 2009 compared to 25 in 2008. Of these 23 were solved and rest will be worked out soon,” Dadwal told reporters at the Delhi Police annual press conference here.
Delhi Police received 2,708 PCR calls from senior citizens, of which 24 percent were related to family disputes.
“More than 30 senior citizens are contacted on telephone daily by the Senior Citizen Security Cell. At least 10 senior citizens are visited daily by a police team,” he pointed out.
Delhi Police conducted a security audit of senior citizens last year and 8,864 people were registered with the police.
Dadwal said following a massive verification drive launched by the police in past two years, crime by servants has come down by 21 percent.
“About 730,067 houses were covered under the door-to-door survey by police and 126,218 servants were checked out. Of these 111,893 (89 percent) were found to have filled the verification form,” he said.
Delhi Police have also verified about 171,584 (86 percent) tenants in the national capital.
