Chennai : The Tamil Nadu assembly session that commences Wednesday at Fort St. George may be the last one to be held in the current premises.
The government is constructing a new secretariat in the centre of the city and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi wants to hold the budget session in the new complex.
Karunanidhi has hinted at his retirement in June this year after the World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore, and he may want the new complex operational before then, politicians say.
For the state government, the new assembly complex, the Tamil conference and the Anna Centenary library are the three major projects that have to be completed before Karunanidhi retires, paving the way for his son and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The ensuing assembly session will, meanwhile, begin with the customary address by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.
The session will also see the entry of seven new legislators who were victorious in recent by-polls.
The assembly session is expected to last for a week with the motion of thanks to be moved for the governor’s address and Karunanidhi speaking on it.
The opposition, smarting under successive election defeats, will be raising issues like price rise, by-poll irregularities and power shortage.
