New Delhi: Iceland has invited Indian investment to the island nation, especially in the areas of renewable energy.
The invitation was extended by the visiting Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson at a meeting with three Indian apex industry chambers Thursday.
“Geothermal energy can play a significant role in the electricity production of countries and regions rich in high-temperature fields which are associated with volcanic activity. Capacity building and transfer of technology are key issues in the sustainable development of geothermal resources,” said Grimsson.
The Icelandic leader arrived in Mumbai Monday, and in Delhi Wednesday evening. Grimsson was accorded a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan Thursday morning.
He said that Icelandic energy industry has opened up its doors to all those interested in the development of renewable energy.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said that in its quest for economic development, India was seeking to build partnerships across the globe to source technological solutions to meet the domestic challenges.
Grimsson also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and held discussions on bilateral, regional and international issues.
In the afternoon, he was conferred with the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding 2007.
Thursday evening, Grimsson met President Pratibha Patil, who hosted a state banquet in his honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
