Gandhinagar: Spiritual leader Asaram Bapu seems to have provoked the ire of the third sex. Eunuchs in Ahmedabad took to the streets here Monday protesting against what they termed as the lampooning of the eunuch mayor of Sagar in Madhya Pradesh in one of his religious discourses.

“We demand an unqualified apology from him for his remarks ridiculing ‘her’,” said their leader, Sonia.

Kamla Bua, an eunuch, was elected mayor of Sagar town in December.

The eunuchs who organized a protest demonstration in Mirzapur locality of Ahmedabad later burnt an effigy of the spiritual leader.

Worked up over the issue, the eunuch organizations within the state are considering their future course of action. “We have decided to call a meeting of our various representative bodies in the state and do not rule out the possibility of moving the high court against him,” Sonia added.

Asaram Bapu and his ashrams in the state have already earned the ire of the authorities.

While a judicial enquiry commission is looking into the mysterious death of two of the students of the ashram residential school in July 2008 in Ahmedabad, notices have been served on its ashrams in Ahmedabad and in north Gujarat.

In Ahmedabad, the ashram had to vacate over 6,000 sq mt of land it had encroached upon. In Surat, the high court verdict has already gone against the ashram which has been ordered to vacate the land.

Asaram Bapu also finds himself named in a case of attempt to murder lodged by the police after one of his estranged disciplines, Raju Chandak, faced an attempt on his life. Chandak had named the spiritual leader for moral misconduct with one of his devotees at his Jaipur ashram.
