The gun battle broke out in the Kakeri-Kutrem hilly stretch in the violence-hit Dantewada district, some 500 km south of state capital Raipur, when a contingent of district force and Special Police Officers (SPOs) stormed the Maoists’ hideout.

“It was a fierce battle and everything went as per our plan. Four rebels who were in uniform were gunned down. We also recovered three 12 bore guns and two containers of explosives at the encounter site,” Superintendent of Police Amresh Mishra told IANS.

The gun battle came just a day after Home Minister P. Chidambaram chaired a meeting in Raipur of the chief ministers of Orissa and Chhattisgarh and Maharatra’s home minister, where it was decided to step up the offensive against Maoists and take the battle against rebels to their hideouts.
