Septuagenarian arrested for stealing jewellery

New Delhi: A septuagenarian woman, who was caught on camera while allegedly stealing expensive jewellery from a shop here, was remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a Delhi court Friday.

Vimla Nath, 73, who belongs to an affluent family, was sent to jail till Feb 14 by Metropolitan Magistrate Jitender Mishra. She was arrested Wednesday.

She allegedly stole silver jewellery worth nearly Rs.16,000 from a shop in New Delhi area.

On Jan 19, the woman, accompanied by a young woman, was stopped by a salesman when he spotted a bracelet in her hand. When he inquired about its bill she returned the jewellery, stating that she suffered from amnesia, or memory loss.

When shop owner Sangeeta Kathait scanned through the video footage of the day, she found that some more articles were missing. Consequently, she lodged an FIR with the police, who arrested Vimla Nath.
