New Delhi: The Congress Wednesday expressed concern over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and said that “inimical” elements from across the border were trying to create tension and violence in the valley.
“Trouble is being fostered by elements across the border. We will resist it. These efforts will not succeed,” congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters here.
Natarajan said the party was confident that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would not fall prey to the designs of forces against the country.
“The centre and the state government is seized of the matter and we are confident that they will be able to restore law and order and peace in the soonest possible time,” she said.
At this juncture, she added, it was the duty of all political parties in the state to cooperate with the efforts of the government to restore peace and ensure that normalcy returned at the earliest.
Asked about deployment of the army in Srinagar, Natarajan said she was not in a position to comment on the exact position of army’s deployment in the troubled areas but informed that the Cabinet Committee on Security had met and would take an appropriate decision.
She said it was a national issue and forces “inimical” to the country were creating trouble.
An indefinite curfew was imposed Wednesday in various towns of Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar where the army staged a flag march in some parts following widespread violence the day before that led to four people being killed and over 90 injured.
