Johannesburg : South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune insists that there were not enough vuvuzelas in the Soccer City stadium here and his team didn’t get loud enough support from the home fans during the football World Cup opening match.
Khune said the atmosphere during their opening 1-1 draw with Mexico Friday, was “like a Mexico home game”.
The goalkeeper said he hopes that South Africa supporters will be more vocal during the team’s next Group A match against Uruguay in Pretoria.
“There were not enough (vuvuzelas). It was more like a Mexico home game,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Kune as saying.
The South African fans in the crowd of 84,490 did blow the plastic trumpets throughout the match. But the noise was not as deafening as Khune expected, especially during the first half, when Mexico dominated and had the most chances.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t blow a lot of vuvuzelas, but let’s hopes in the next game we’ll blow more,” Khune said.
“The people who were making too much noise were the Mexicans, rather than hearing those vuvuzelas,” he said.
The noise level picked up after South Africa scored the game’s first goal in the 55th minute, but died down again as Mexico pressed forward and then equalized in the 79th.
“Our advantage should have been the 12th player, the supporters blowing those vuvuzelas,” Khune said. “Let’s hope in the next game there will be more,” he added.
