New Delhi : Nepal’s Parliamentary committee has recommended scrapping of 1950 treaty with India.
Claiming that India encroached 60,000 hectares of the Nepalese territory, a Parliamentary committee has recommended scrapping of the “unequal” Peace and Friendship Treaty with New Delhi inked in 1950 and signing of a new pact in its place.
The International Affairs and Human Rights committee of Nepal’s Parliament said a new pact needs to be signed, keeping with the changing pace of time, Indian official media reported.
The committee led by Man Bahadur Bishwokarma, in a report, also alleged encroachment of 60,000 hectares of the Nepalese territory by India, after it conducted a inspection of the area.
Bishwokarma submitted a memorandum to the 601-member Constituent Assembly’s Chairman Subhash Nembang Tuesday, suggesting scrapping of the 1950 treaty and inking of a new pact with India, according to sources in the Parliament.
After surveying disputed areas in the border from Jhapa in eastern Nepal to Kanchanpur in the West, the committee emphasised the need to redraw the boundary based on old maps, taking into consideration the present situation on the ground.
It said that in order to maintain friendly relations with India, all “unequal” treaties including the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty should be scrapped and new pacts signed between the two countries.
