“I have no doubts about our party winning the election,” he told reporters here before leaving for Pennagaram for campaigning in support of DMK candidate P.N.P. Inbasekaran.

Asked about his elder son and party strongman in southern Tamil Nadu M.K. Alagiri’s reported comment that he would not accept anybody other than Karunanidhi as his leader, Karunanidhi parried the question, saying the question should be posed to Alagiri.

Campaigning in Pennagaram, seen as PMK’s strong-hold, has reached its peak with leaders of all major political parties trying to woo the voters. Electioneering will come to an end Thursday.

AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa campaigned for two days for her party’s candidate R. Anbalagan.

Karunanidhi’s decision to hit the campaign trail this time after keeping away during other bypolls shows the importance the DMK is attaching to Pennagaram.

For PMK, which suffered a serious reverse in last year’s Lok Sabha elections, a victory in Pennagaram would not only be a redeeming feature but also enable it to chart its future course.

Meanwhile, Chennai-based Loyola College, based on a survey done by it, has predicted DMK’s victory in the Pennagaram bypoll.
