Guwahati : An undergraduate girl student of the premier Cotton College in Assam’s main city of Guwahati Monday committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan due to alleged exam-related stress.
A college teacher said Shahnaz Rasul Ahmed, a Zoology third year BSc student, was found hanging inside the conference hall of the department around midday.
“She used a dupatta (scarf) to commit suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. Her body was discovered by a department assistant who found her inside the locked conference hall on the third floor of the college,” Chinmoy Phukan, a magistrate, said.
Shahnaz was appearing in BSc final exams – she had already written two major papers and came from home Monday to write her third paper.
“It appeared she came to the college to sit for the exams, but instead of writing her papers she must have stealthily entered the conference hall in the morning and committed suicide,” a college teacher said.
Shahnaz was good in studies. Her mother is a professor at the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh and her father is an engineer.
“We suspect she must have committed suicide due to exam-related stress. We really don’t know why she took her own life, but there is a strong reason to believe she was unable to take the examination pressure,” Gaurav Phukan, general secretary of the Cotton College Students’ Union, said.
