London : Prime Minister David Cameron has wasted no time in chairing the inaugural meeting of the new National Security Council which his government has set up since coming to office on Tuesday night.
The Conservative prime minister further emulated the US by appointing a National Security Advisor, the country’s former most senior diplomat, Sir Peter Ricketts.
The council, headed by Cameron, also includes 8 senior ministers as well as military chiefs and the heads of the three branches of secret services, MI5, MI6 and GCHQ monitoring agency.
A spokesman for the prime minister said the first meeting on Wednesday evening received briefings on the political and military situation in Afghanistan and also an update on the UK’s wider security situation.
Prior to being elected, the Conservatives pledged to establish a National Security Council so that “decisions about national security and international relations will be taken together.”
