Prof Mushirul Hasan to head National Archives of India

New Delhi: Noted historian and former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Professor Mushirul Hasan, has been appointed as the Director General of the National Archives of India. Prof. Hasan is also a serving professor at Jamia Millia.

Prof Hasan has been a Professor in Jamia since 1981. He received his education at Aligarh Muslim University and Cambridge University. Besides teaching and holding numerous responsibilities at Jamia, he has also served as the Vice Chairman of Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla and as Visiting Professor to several universities.



An eminent historian and recipient of Padma Shri, Prof Hasan is the author of many important books on Indian history.

The National Archives of India is the repository of the non-current records of the Government of India and is holding them in trust for the use of administrators and scholars. It is an Attached Office of the Ministry of Culture. It was set up in March 1891 in Calcutta (Kolkata) as the Imperial Record Department and subsequent to the transfer of the National Capital from Calcutta to New Delhi in 1911 it was shifted to its present building in 1926.
