Patna : The Bihar Human Rights Commission has directed the government to pay 10 people, jailed on false charges of murder and kidnapping, compensation of Rs.40,000 each.
Commission chairman, Justice (retired) S.N. Jha, Thursday also recommended appropriate action be initiated against officials responsible for their wrongful confinement.
The order came after a senior police officer confirmed in his report that they were arrested and sent to jail on false charges.
“It was a clear case of miscarriage of justice,” Jha said.
In December last year, the commission had taken suo moto cognizance of newspaper reports on two separate cases registered at the Nokha and Karakat police stations in Rohtas district.
In the Nokha case, eight people were arrested for kidnapping a boy. But later the boy was found in Sonepur. He deposed in the court that he was not kidnapped.
In another case, two people were arrested and sent to jail on charges of murder but again the charges were found to be false.
