Rio De Janeiro : Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Friday criticised additional sanctions against Iran that are currently being discussed by the UN Security Council.
The Security Council gathered in New York this week to discuss a draft resolution imposing a new set of sanctions on the Islamic republic, which is accused by Western powers of attempting to build nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian energy programme.
“Some people don’t want Iran to agree to the proposal which they had put forward before… they don’t like it anymore,” the president said.
A trilateral agreement on uranium exchange was reached Monday by Iran, Turkey and Brazil, setting out terms under which Iran will send 1.2 tonnes of its low-enriched uranium to get 120 kg of 20 percent enriched uranium fuel. The swap will be carried out throughout the year on Turkey’s territory.
The Brazilian president praised the deal as a “remarkable progress”.
“The truth is that Iran, which has been portrayed as an evil unwilling to negotiate, came to the negotiating table,” he said.
