New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi was “not a super cabinet” but an advisory body which has made effective contributions in pushing social development programmes.

“It (NAC) is not a super cabinet. It is an advisory body,” Manmohan Singh said in response to a query at a press conference to mark one year of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in its second term.

The NAC was set up in 2004 during the first tenure of the UPA government and had given its suggestions for formulation of key social sector legislations including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and Right to Information Act.

“That NAC has not been there for a couple of years. When it was there, it made very effective contribution to push forward the programmes of social development in our country,” the Prime Minister said.

The government re-appointed Gandhi as the chairperson of the NAC in March. She had resigned as NAC chairperson in 2006.
