New Delhi : Former army chief General (Retd) Deepak Kapoor who has been named in the Adarsh housing society scam Thursday sought an audience with Defence Minister A.K. Antony to explain his position.
Kapoor, who is said to have received one of the flats in Mumbai’s upscale Colaba neighbourhood originally meant for war heroes and widows, has hinted that he would welcome the army inquiry into the scam, a source said.
“He will officially inform Antony about surrendering the apartment allotted in his name,” said the source.
However, it was not known if the defence ministry has okayed Kapoor’s meeting with Antony but the source said the two are likely to meet after US President Barack Obama’s visit.
Upset with the scam, Army Chief General V.K. Singh Thursday said the involvement of some serving and retired officers in the multi-crore rupees scam has tainted the image of the 1.3 million force.
The chief was speaking for the first time on the controversial residential structure that was originally meant to be a six-storey but was surreptitiously converted into a plush 31-storey building and has over 100 members, including former service chiefs, and senior serving army officials.
