New Delhi: The Delhi government Monday decided to institute a three-member committee of ministers to formulate modalities for allotment of nearly 17,000 low-cost houses to the poor in the metropolis.
Presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the cabinet discussed in detail the issue of accommodating vulnerable sections of society and also about development works in slums.
“A policy paper has already been prepared by chief secretary (Rakesh Mehta) in this regard. A committee comprising ministers of PWD, urban development and social welfare departments has been set up for allotment of houses to poor,” Dikshit said after the cabinet meeting.
The committee, chaired by Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia, includes PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and Social Welfare Minister Mangat Ram Singhal.
A government official said that already over 9,000 houses for poor have been built and the construction of another 8,000 such houses was underway. The committee has been asked to decide on the modalities-framework soon and bring it back in the cabinet within 20 days, the official said.
These houses are given to the poor under the Rajiv Ratna Awas Yojna.
The committee has also been asked to decide the time-frame for allotment of such houses besides the basis on which they are to be given so that the facility reaches only the vulnerable section and no else takes advantage.
