India showcases 71 sari draping styles at CWG opening ceremony

New Delhi: When you have the country’s rich cultural heritage and beauty being highlighted, can the beautiful sari be left behind? Leading the 71 contingents participating in the Commonwealth Games, at its opening ceremony here Sunday, were 71 Indian women each of whom had draped the sari in a different style.

So you had one who had draped the sari in a traditional Lavani style of Maharashtra, another one wearing a sari in the ‘seedha palla style of Gujarat and yet another in the style of Bengal.

Other drapes were the Coorgi style, the Nivi style, the Gond style and the likes.

The saris also had different designs and were mostly in bright colours.

The sari, the traditional attire of India, is a piece of unstitched cloth that ranges from four to nine metres in length.
